Starting a new job can be both exciting and overwhelming. There are new people to meet, new tasks to learn, and new expectations to live up to. It's a time of adjustment, and it can be difficult to know where to start. However, my experience at Payflip has shown me that there are certain best practices for onboarding that can make the transition smoother and more productive.
One of the most helpful aspects of my onboarding at Payflip was the very clear Dashboard in Notion. This dashboard had tasks planned out for the first six (!) weeks of my job at Payflip, giving me a clear sense of what was expected of me and what I needed to accomplish in order to succeed. Having this structure in place was incredibly helpful, as it allowed me to stay organized and focused on what was most important.
Another aspect of my onboarding that was particularly helpful was the themed introduction week by week. Each week had a specific topic, such as zooming out and seeing the big picture in week one or introducing me to the Sales journey at Payflip in week two. This approach allowed me to take a step-by-step approach to learning about the company, its products and services, and how I fit into the bigger picture. It was incredibly nice since this has given me the time to properly dive into the topics and become more and more well-versed in everything Payflip.
In addition to the structured onboarding process, I was provided with all the tools I needed to perform as well as possible, both at the office and when working from home. I was given the laptop of my choice, a second screen, a mouse, and other equipment that helped me work efficiently and comfortably. Of course I also got some STICKERS!!! Adding flare to every wall and device that needs it!
Another thing that stood out at Payflip was the guided ownership approach which fits very well with my personal way of working. I had a lot of meetings to help guide me through the onboarding process, but I also had full ownership to request meetings or not, depending on my needs. This allowed me to work independently when I felt comfortable, but also to get me the support and guidance I needed when necessary.
On a more personal note, day one started with a team breakfast, team lunch and really focused on getting to know everyone. Not very onboarding specific but I'm loving the office! The plants all over are a great touch that I'm loving! Shoutout to the cactus next to the office needing some love though! (not the one in the picture)😉🌵🌵🌵🌵
In conclusion, my first two weeks at Payflip were incredibly positive, and I learned a lot about what makes for a successful onboarding process. By providing a clear onboarding dashboard, structured theme weeks, all the necessary tools, a hands-on approach, and a welcoming environment, Payflip has set me up for success as a new employee.
